Keeping notes that stay useful

It is easy to collect more words than we can ever revisit. Highlights, links, fragments, and reminders arrive faster than they can become understanding. The answer is rarely a more elaborate filing system. It is a clearer reason for keeping each note.

Write for your future self

Record enough context to make the idea understandable later. Instead of saving a sentence alone, add why it caught your attention and what it might change. A few words of interpretation turn a fragment into something you can use.

Give each note one purpose

A note can preserve a fact, develop a question, support a project, or suggest a next action. When several purposes are mixed together, split them. Small notes are easier to connect and easier to discard when they stop mattering.

Return through real work

Do not review everything on an arbitrary schedule. Revisit notes when a conversation, decision, or project gives them a reason to return. Useful notes naturally reappear in useful work; the rest can remain quiet without becoming a burden.
